Insomnia has a few different aspects that can affect your life in various ways. Basically, insomnia is either the lack of ability to fall asleep at all during the night, or falling asleep only for short periods of time and waking up too early. What causes the fatigue and all the other symptoms of insomnia is not having enough of REM sleep. REM (or rapid eye movement) sleep is one of the most important parts of sleep, and the actual time that the body gets his energy back. Not having enough REM sleep makes the person tired because the mind and body did not have enough rest and can cause depression and some memory problems. As opposed to chronic insomnia, the sleeplessness in acute insomnia should stop by itself in a short period of time and the person usually goes to back to sleeping normally.

Children that do not get enough sleep for one reason or another tend to be tenser, irritable, depressed, show low results at school and act in irresponsible ways such as driving when the only thing they want is to crawl under a warm blanket. If you really love your kid and want the best for him, do not believe him when he says that he is sleeping enough, with excuses like “I’m just going through a phase” explaining why he is getting lower grades than his classmates. A child needs to get at least eight hours of sleep every day, including during the weekend, in order to function properly.
